Grant: RTF006
Detail: To help fund the production costs of recording a CD of song cycles by the composer Jonathan Dove (“All You Who Sleep Tonight – Song Cycles by Jonathan Dove”)
Recording: The CD was released on 28th July 2014. The song cycles were recorded in May 2014 by Patricia Bardon (mezzo-soprano); Claire Booth (soprano); Nicky Spence (tenor) and Andrew Matthews-Owen (piano).
Background: Jonathan Dove is a leading composer for opera, choral music and song. This first recording of his song cycles was conceived by the pianist and musical entrepreneur Andrew Matthews-Owen, who recorded a 70 minute CD of varied song cycles, some with instrumental contrast to break the voice/piano sound.
Funding: Naxos part-fundied the cost of producing the recording. The grant from the Foundation, made possible through a generous donation by Klaus and Elena Remme, provided the remainder of the required funding.
Reviews: “..delightful anthology” **** FT, 25 June 2014. “Throughout these cycles one is grateful to encounter a composer whose writing for the voice, and his understanding of its technique, is so approachable. We must be grateful to Naxos for making these works available in such excellent performances.” MusicWeb International July 2014.
